The 1934-35 Melbourne Centenary Florin was struck to commemorate the centenaries of Melbourne & Victoria. While Australians battled the Great Depression, Council was busy planning the celebrations for the two 100th anniversaries. Victoria's 1st permanent European settlement in 1834 & Melbourne soon after in 1835. As a result, the 1934-35 Centenary Florin is very scarce and some like the Specimen-Pattern, Proof Type I, Proof Type II, Foy & Gibsons Bag and You are The Star box are very rare, and all have become highly sought-after by collectors.
The 1934-35 Centenary Florin also features an obverse portrait unique in Australian coinage. Created by Percy Metcalfe, the design was based on the familiar Bertram Mackennal effigy. It appeared on coins in other countries - but never on other Australian coins. When the coin was released to the public it featured a naked man (rider) on horseback and some like the Specimen-Pattern even had a nipple on the riders left breast which was considered inappropriate for the period and this divided the opinions amongst the public.
